A friend asked my to take a look at designing a remodel for a house they recently purchased. The house is in good shape, although some elements were a little dated. The house sits on a really amazing piece of property. The property is 3 acres and is nestled into a bend in canyon creek that boarders the lot on 3 sides.

This friend is a contractor and wanted his house to be much more open and modern, and he really emphasized that they wanted a black house. The entire exterior of the house is black with the exception of wood accents at two locations, these are the only two place where volumes are subtracted from the house and occur at the main entry and back patio. I always think of this design language of being a bright red apple someone has taken a bite out of. The red protective skin of the apple being the black lap sided exterior, and the bite out of the apple showing the bright white sweet flesh of the apple being the softer more natural vertical cedar siding.
The Theme of black continues to the interior but becomes a black and white theme, and you will notice areas where a volume is subtracted like the kitchen island you again get wood accents.
I tried to do as much as I could to modernize the house fairly simply, window replacements, moving a couple interior walls, paint and a couple finish changes. I didn’t design a large addition to the house or anything that would drastically change the shape of the house. The area we did splurge on is the back patio. I added a large 16′ multi-slide door that opens to the back patio and a large covered patio area with a fire pit and lots of room to entertain. This back patio looks directly at the creek surrounding the house and with the new window wall will help connect the interior of the house to the creek just out the back door. The client is a landscape contractor and this large back patio will be a great base for him to expand upon and create a landscaping showcase.
Ohh, is this your buddy who wanted the new construction house?
Wow, what a renovation! pretty big undertaking, but at the same time, you aren’t doing anything too crazy. Just really putting the money to the biggest bang for the buck. I really think everything from the exterior treatment to the interior work is great. I really enjoy the simple steel/wood clad columns. The repetition works wonders. Very slick kitchen, love no upper cabinets. allows it to fit nicely in that taller space. What’s the plan for the detached garage?
You really did a ton of work on this project, way way more than I have ever done for someone. How many hours did you bill? I assume you did the as built measurements yourself. Did you go through a lot of design options?
Your buddy should be really thankful and appreciative of the work you did. I hope that they go through with ALL of it. I hate it when clients pick and choose parts of the design, then ultimately nothing really works. Very sweet project. hopefully in a year you can post the finals!
I had 23.5 hrs into this house, and another 6.5hrs into the original ground up house I looked at with them. I think they will end up doing all parts and pieces. They are already ordering windows and appliances and various kitchen stuff. A couple things will probably change. The Client plans to add a couple additional windows, and they have a seperate kitchen designer that will probably make a few modifications to the kitchen. I will probably continue update the models as they make changes. The detached garage will just end up being painted…. I think the client already had the house painted. Luckily on this one they had the original house drawings, which didn’t match 100% but were a huge time saver.. I hate as builts.
I was looking at some of your blog posts on this internet site and I think this site is rattling informative ! Keep on posting . Zachery Lilyblade
