Lamp

When I moved into my house the room that acts as my office had only a switched outlet and no lights. I installed the light Pat and I made for our photo wall in college, but I still need a bit more light. I decided to design and build a fixture around the Plumen light bulb. (Side Note: Plumen light bulbs are complete trash and I have since replaced it, which is a little disappointing)

The light fixture is hung off a fir structure with red cloth electrical cord, and the socket is screened with a cork shade.

Cork Lamp shade helps conceal the less attractive parts of the bulb & socket.

Lamp is fastened directly to the wall with screws that are then capped with end grain fir. The red cloth electrical cord is held in place with brass rings.

  1. Looks really cool, Whats the diameter of the lamp shade? Did you make that cork shade or buy one separate. I don’t think I have seen one of those before, looks awesome.
Did you ever consider doing a hinge to lower the lamp closer to your work? although it would have made things real complicated. The joint you have right now is nice and simple.
    Where is the switch??
Why did you choose to start the wood in the middle of the wall, as opposed to letting it come out of the desk?

  2. I was planning to make a shade myself, but then I ran across this cork one at Lowes and decided just to use it. The lamp is just used as general illumination for the room I have desk lights for specific task lighting, although it would have been nice to have the lamp more adjustable. As far as the decision on how far the wood went down the wall, I just make the both pieces of the lamp the same length, it has been awhile, but if I remember the wood was left over from a wood screen I made in my basement, and the amount of wood I had may have influenced how long of pieces I used.
