I signed up for a free on-line class at corsera.org called “Design:Creation of Artifacts in Society. Every week there is a prompt to do a little design problem, this week they asked everyone to identify some sort of thing we found dissatisfying in our environments, and come up with a solution. I found there where no really good looking cat for sale at petsmart so I decided to design a better looking, better smelling cat box.
The cat box doubles as a planter to help make it less obvious that it is a cat box. Coming out of the top of the cat box are tubes filled with activated charcoal connect to the litter chamber that help ventilate the cat box while eliminating odor. There are also solid Pyrex tubes sticking out of the top of the box to help channel light in to the litter compartment, similar to they system used in the scjohnson building by Frank Loyd Wright http://scjohnson.com/en/company/architecture/Wright-Buildings.aspx. I ran out of time to finish this they way I wanted to before it was due, but you get the idea.
Its pretty cool you signed up for that course, I would imagine it would actually be pretty fun.
You couldn’t have picked a better thing to re design, litter boxes are horrible.
I think a cat would enjoy going through the space between the cor-ten. How would you take the cat crap out?

Lou would love this cat box. She is always dragging out kitty litter though and makes a big mess, maybe you could include a paw cleaning device/surface?
